Am I the only one who doesn't understand the point of speed reading? If anything I feel like I read too fast as it is. There was some little brat on that national spelling bee thing talking about how she read a novel in 3 hours. To me that's like going to a restaurant and wolfing down your dinner in one bite. yeah, you ate it... but did you really take the time to enjoy it? Can you really grok a book you've only spent three hours with?

My list of stories to draw just gets longer and longer. A Martian Odyssey is an old sci-fi story from 1934 written by Stanley G. Weinbaum.  I think it would make a good comic book (with all kinds of lovely Jim Woodring-esque visuals).  But it might be a while until I really get started on it.

also, Folk #2 got a very positive review over at Optical Sloth.

also also, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said is being made into a movie. The ratio of good to bad Philip K Dick film adaptations does not leave me with high hopes. As good as A Scanner Darkly or Blade Runner? hmmm... well, as long as it's better than Paycheck or Next.

I did this is like five minutes. the pen i was using started going dry as i was finishing it though.

So everyone, how are you doing tonight? I've been working on multiple comics lately. I'll post stuff when they're done. I should have FOLK3 ready to print this weekend. Although, the business of mini-comics couldn't possibly be less rewarding. I need to submit to some anthologies or send my shit to some stores. something.

oh, last night at about 3am I found my power animal.

...The Andromeda Strain is NOT one of the best science fiction movies ever. Not even close. I wouldn't even put it in my top fifty. In my mind, there are two very different kinds of sci-fi: that which uses elements of science to further the plot and that which builds the plot around the science. I should have known what I was getting into with something based on the work of Micheal Crichton but, I'd always heard that this movie is really great so I gave it a shot.
This stuff is not for me. Crichton was really great at coming up with an interesting scenario and going absolutely nowhere with it. Killer germs from space! That sounds great! I can think of all kinds of different directions that I could go with that! But not Crichton! Forty-something minutes of boring interchangeable characters being decontaminated is not a good movie. Yeah wow you're in an underground lab. Great. MOVE THE FUCK ON. Jesus god... that movie felt like a half-decent episode of the Outer Limits stretched out into two hours of technicolor boredom.  Is a little character development too much to ask? Am I nuts to expect a movie to have oh... I don't know.. a theme? Ugh.

and just to prove that I can write something better here's a rough sketch page of something I'm in the middle of doing

I do most of my writing in comics form. If the dialog isn't readable just let me know.

This character started out as just being a superhero guy with a horn on his forehead. But after filling my sketchbook with various costume ideas and not figuring out what to do I just made him into an actual unicorn. And then I got the idea to make it sword & sorcery comic. I don't know how well that will work out because, in general, I'm  not a huge fan of sword & sorcery. But I felt like I needed to do something different... and well, this is different.

remember my post from Thursday?

well I managed to do 24 pages. I started at 10:30 Friday morning and finished about 19 hours later. by the time I finished I was delirious and my right arm was about to fall off.
I'm gonna erase the pencils and clean up some of the art and make a mini out of it using this cover. So, here it is:

and here's something abstract. Just an exercise in motion; I was trying to have it flow in 3 directions at once (left-to-right, up-and-down, and zig-zag). I've kind of been doing a lot of abstract comics lately.

also, I'm going to see Star Trek later tonight. I've heard it's "as good as the Wrath of Khan." but everyone says that like they just assume that WoK is everyone's favorite Trek movie. Personally I don't care for it all that much. It's full of really obvious plot holes, Kirstie Allie is in it, and Kirk's "KAAAAAAHHHHHN!" makes me cringe with embarrassment every time I hear it. I'm more of a Star Trek IV kind of guy. No villain, mind melding with whales, neck pinching obnoxious punk rockers.... how can they possibly top that?
